PAPYRUS for Macintosh
Product Information
The PAPYRUS Bibliography System
& Knowledge Manager
Version 8.0 For Macintosh
PAPYRUS lets you computerize your reference collection.
Type in your references or import them from existing computer sources.
PAPYRUS can instantly retrieve any citation from the collection. Then,
working with your word processor, PAPYRUS will automatically assemble
your bibliographies -- perfectly formatted for any publication.
Whether you're a university professor or an industry researcher, PAPYRUS
will keep track of your reprints, assemble your bibliographies, and prepare
reading lists for your students. If you are a graduate student, use PAPYRUS
to collect your references and automatically generate your dissertation bibliography.
You can also use PAPYRUS to link together references, personal notes, quotations, and graphic images, creating a personal "web" of cross-linked information.

Properly handles references "In Press," "Submitted," etc.
Keeps track of references that have not yet been completely filled in.
Automatically-updated Keyword, Journal, and Author/Editor Name "dictionaries" ensure consistent spelling of names and abbreviations.

Sophisticated handling of variant author names, such as "Smith,JB" vs. "Smith, Joanna"
Deft management of journal entries includes support for multiple styles of abbreviation (e.g., Index Medicus, Chem Abstracts), library call numbers, journal URLs on the Web, and information on local library holdings.
Powerful global search & replace functions.

Create Your Own Web of Information
Besides handling your bibliographic citations, PAPYRUS can help you organize your notes and images. It is a superb tool for preparing a dissertation or for summarizing lengthy works.
Create notecards containing your own notes and comments, quotations from references, and/or graphic images. Each notecard also has its own searchable Title and Keyword fields.
Link notecards to relevant references. Or link notecards to each other in a simple hierarchy or a complex web.
Link references to each other to indicate any sort of relationship. For example, you could indicate that one reference "Reviews" or "Refutes" another. Or trace connections between the works of teachers and their former students (or their rivals!).
Link keywords to each other as "Synonyms," "Supercategory/Subcategory," etc.
Display or print any of these links at any time. Or tell PAPYRUS to follow some or all link types during searches.
Reference Links window
Imports References From Anywhere
Not only does PAPYRUS accept typed-in references, but it can also directly import references from almost anywhere:
International online databases -- Medline, Dialog, etc.
CD-ROMs such as Silver Platter.
Monthly reference services -- Current Contents, Reference Update.
Other personal bibliography applications -- EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite, etc.
General purpose databases, such as dBase and Access.
Even old bibliographies or other text files.
PAPYRUS employs artificial intelligence techniques in reading your source file, alerting you to potential problems -- such as misspelled journal abbreviations -- and helping you avoid duplicate entries.
Searches Your Reference Collection
PAPYRUS can instantly locate any reference if you know even part of one of its authors' names, a snippet of its title, or just a word appearing within its abstract.
Instant search results with a single click from the Keyword, Journal, and Author/Editor Names windows.
Search on any combination of fields, including authors, editors, keywords, words from the title or abstract, journal name, year of publication, etc.
Automatically locates variations of author names ("Smith,JB", Smith,J", "Smith,John,Jr.") and journal abbreviations ("New England Journal of Medicine", "NEJM", "New Engl. J. Med.").
Full Boolean searches, combining "And", "Or", "Not" connectors. The use of parentheses ensures that complex search specifications have the results you intend.
Save your search results for future use and refinement.
Produces Perfect Bibliographies...
PAPYRUS will create reference lists and bibliographies in whatever format you desire.
Comes with dozens of predefined formats for popular journals in many fields (biology, medicine, physics, chemistry, geology, etc.).
Standard styles, such as Vancouver, APA, and Chicago Manual, are fully supported.
You can easily create new output formats as needed, with extensive control over all details.
References may be arranged alphabetically, or in the order cited within a manuscript. Or you can sort them some other way -- such as a reading list organized by topic or year.
Reference lists can be accompanied by an index by author, keyword, or other field.
Send your bibliography directly to your printer, with full control over font, margins, headers, footers, line spacing, etc.
Or export your bibliography to any Macintosh word processor.
Output perfect HTML reference lists, ready to be posted to your Web site.
...Automatically
As you write your manuscript, use PAPYRUS to insert citation placeholders into the text. Later PAPYRUS can scan your manuscript, automatically assembling and inserting your bibliography, while simultaneously rewriting the in-text citations according to whatever formatting style you choose.
Insert a placeholder with a few keystrokes, or simply by dragging a reference from any PAPYRUS window directly to your manuscript.
Use either author-year ("...(Smith 1998)"), numbered citation ("...4"), or cite key ("...[SMITH98]") methods.
PAPYRUS automatically adds a letter to the year when appropriate ("Smith 1987b"), and can deal with whatever punctuation and "et al." requirements apply.
Can insert formatted citations into footnotes, automatically choosing between one style for initial citations and a second style for repeat citations.
Currently fully compatible with Microsoft Word (Versions 5, 6, and 98), WordPerfect (Version 3.x), and Nisus Writer (Version 5.x).
Also works with plain text files, RTF documents, plus TeX and LaTeX.
If Apple ever changes its policies, PAPYRUS will also support AppleWorks/ClarisWorks.
Connects With the World Wide Web
PAPYRUS works with your Web browser, e-mail application, newsreader, etc. to connect your database to the Internet.
A click on a URL in any textual field will launch your browser or other appropriate application to bring that Internet resource to your screen.
Filling in the URL fields in reference or journal entries links those entries to your browser -- visit that URL by clicking the reference or journal in any PAPYRUS window.
When PAPYRUS creates an HTML reference list, such URLs will be incorporated as active links.
PAPYRUS uses Mac OS Internet Config to manage all links, always complying with your general Internet Config preference settings.
PAPYRUS provides two carefully designed reference types specifically for Internet and Usenet citations.
A True Macintosh Application
Unlike some other bibliography programs, PAPYRUS is a true Macintosh application -- not just a Windows clone.
Extensive use of Macintosh Drag & Drop
Communication via Apple Events with word processors and spellcheckers
Balloon Help for most windows and dialogs
WorldScript-savvy, including multi-language alphabetical sorting
